In December 2006 the local community of 3,000 people bought the South Uist Estate from a syndicate of owners. Covering 93,000 acres over the three islands of Benbecula, Eriskay and South Uist, the estate is the largest community owned area in Scotland.

Birthplace of Flora MacDonald, who helped Bonnie Prince Charlie escape to Skye after his ill-fated attempt to gain the throne of Scotland, the Isle of South Uist is also the seat of Clan Ranald and the imposing remains of Ormacleit Castle testify to their historic power.

Stòras Uibhist, the community company that owns the estate, operates Grogarry Lodge as a stand alone business unit within the company.
